JANICE REID

Following undergraduate studies in geology and palaeontology in Australia, Janice Reid studied anthropology and public health and graduated from Stanford University with a PhD in medical anthropology.  In 1984 she received the Wellcome Medal of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland for research in anthropology as applied to medical problems.  In 1990 she was elected a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA). 

In January 1998 she was made a Member of the Order of Australia for services to cross-cultural public health research and the development of health services for socio-economically disadvantaged groups in the community. In 2003 she was awarded an Australian Centenary Medal for services to Australian society in health and university administration. In 2013 she received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Western Sydney and in 2014 was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales. In 2015 she was made a Companion in the Order of Australia 'for eminent service to the tertiary education sector through executive roles, as an advocate for equitable access to educational opportunities, particularly for Indigenous, refugee and lower socio-economic communities, and to health, medical and health care research and cultural bodies'.
